Sitting in the PCP meeting to learn how to run the door knocking app which tells the names and Party of the walking list it was obvious there are some bad habits in the GOP when it comes to knocking doors. In many cases there is no understanding to the value of doors or how important it is to winning an election and getting out the vote. With just the slightest training this state can be changed but the footwork has to get done. There cannot be the slightest doubt of victory to make the door knocking work.

The main issue the GOP has is they are following the plan invented by Dims which is fools gold. They have plenty of people to waste time and energy on the campaign trail since they have unlimited numbers of motivated volunteers They have unlimited funding although that may not be the case with all the money laundries Trump has shut down. They also have the mediots and internet giving billions of dollars of free advertising and puff pieces while attacking Repubs.

Everyone there was excited to get started but do not seem to be efficient in what they are trying to get done. There appears to be a dependence on technology with the maps although without knowing the software it looks like someone is going to be spending hours making maps. There appears to be the usual paralysis of analysis with the awkward survey questions which beat around the bush when you have to get as many ballots per person as possible.

You need a plan B if you cannot get the walking lists working properly, which is hit the doors, the old-fashioned way of finding out face to face and see if they plan to vote. Even with a list to give you an idea you still need to knock the door properly.

One of my many jobs was selling weatherproof windows and insulation back in the day. If you think you get rejection knocking doors for politics, you should try it for sales. They trained us over and over to at least get someone to talk to you and get a conversation going.

Now if you have a list which tells you the hardcore Repubs this far out, those are your targets to get volunteers who want to do something. There are so many people out there who would do something if they could but do not know what to do. You are looking for Repubs who are throwing bricks at the TV or destroying their computers asking how to change this communist state.

Here is how to find them, hit a hundred doors and you will find ten. You have limited time so you have to sort them quickly. The first thing you do is wear something that does not scream selling you something although you can wear a Trump hat if you want to get straight to the point. I wear Duck gear since it usually gives them a chuckle with the Go Ducks to say hello.

Ring the doorbell and count to ten then walk away. If you hear the door open by the time you get to the street then go back and talk otherwise go to the next house. You do not have time to stand looking desperate when you are trying to see as many as possible. You are only going to have 1 in 3 answer so why wait when you could be talking to the 1.

I then start that I am one of their neighbors talking to people about this candidate or that. I will be knocking for Forests for Oregon and helping candidates. Then ask if they are planning on voting and let them lead the conversation. If they are in the least bit negative or confrontational it is thank you and walk to the next house which likely will not be. They are usually stunned and ask why you don’t want to talk and just thank them again and go find the ones you are looking for.

If you get a positive you ask if they would like to help turn Oregon Republican? If they say yes then you say you need help, a little or a lot it all adds up to victory. Ask if they would put a sign out or make sure their Repub neighbors vote and you will give them a list of the Repubs on their block. This group is hard to stop talking since they want to tell you everything that frustrates them about the Dims. They are the fun ones but can tend to waste time so you will have a chance when you bring back their list.

The door and the porch are an extension of their home. You are honored to be in their home and they will often share their personal issues with you since you are in an extension of their living room. This often turns into a very personal time which often leads to hearing of cancer, heart attacks, divorces, deaths and family issues. Be open since you will be the only ear they have in this anti-social world.

The first door is the hardest but once you hit a couple it always becomes fun and rewarding. There are lots of people hurting and when that door opens you can be the person they have been hoping to hear what they have to say. The technology can help but the person is what makes the difference. Do not confuse activity for accomplishment or the paralysis of analysis getting in the way of knocking those 100 doors.
