God is Good for Oregon

Psalm 143:10 (King James Version)

Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.

For any Beaver Believer who is disheartened by their team and watching the Ducks soar as the number one Oregon fan in the state, I am willing to give you honorary Duck status until the Beavs recover themselves. We are no longer in the same league or playing for anything other than state bragging rights, but it is not like the old days of keeping the other team out of the Rose Bowl. Let’s face it, the game is now the Civil Skirmish and not the Civil War.

For the last six months, I have been saying this is the best team Oregon has ever had while everyone else was questioning this and questioning that. This is the beauty of college football which is changing players in different positions every year and especially the QB. I told them Dante’s En Fuego would be the best QB we have ever had and the first game proved it.

You never really know your QB until the final two minutes of a close game which he has yet to have but his two-minute drill against Montana State was a good look as he completed a TD with no time on the clock in the first half. He only added to his game against Okie State when he threw bomb after bomb warming up for the season which they will go undefeated.

No QB at Oregon has ever had the talent he has at receiver. In the old days there would be three journeymen and one star who would carry the load like McLemore back in the ’96 Rose Bowl team. Most of them were overachievers who developed into top receivers in the Pac, but these guys are top receivers in the country and there are four on the team. They all have great speed, agility and hands to score from anywhere.

The other position of wealth is Running Backs where they are also four deep and as Wittingham showed on the second play the shortest distance between the handoff and the endzone is a straight line right up the middle. Every one of them is built like a truck and have world class speed to the point if they have a step they are gone.

I really knew this team would go undefeated again when I was at the PDX Crusade and the football Chaplain Matt Belden lead the prayer. He told of how 34 players had been saved and baptized a few weeks earlier. When you listen to these kids talk you hear them speak of their salvation and having something bigger than football in their lives. They speak of the brotherhood they have with each other and not being envious of their brother’s playing time, a real fellowship.

When the Okie State coach talked about Oregon paying players big salaries like all the other top caliber schools, it hit a nerve. Oregon has had this dig for twenty years by the Beavs and the Portland sports media like it is a crime when it is just the way things are played today. They both miss the bigger picture why Oregon is a special place and a special team.

Oregon does not have the population of major teams like Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas to recruit, so it has to have something else. What it has is two things none of these places have and never will.

First is being isolated from distractions you will find in big cities. These kids can focus on nothing but their bodies and skills to make them bigger, stronger, and faster. Eugene is a sports town like no other and the entire town lives and dies Ducks in every sport from track to football. This has always made average players play above their heads and now star players play above everyone.

The second part is their dedication to track and learning to run faster. The Ducks have always recruited from the track team and making every player increase their speed, Even the big linemen learn to run faster which you do not see on the TV but in Autzen you can always see the difference between the two teams. Oregon is known as the fastest team in the country and their fastest players are world class which translates into points.

Now the team is almost all Christian which means they are playing for something bigger than themselves. The QB Dante’s En Fuego had a shirt that said God Has This while he was being interviewed which says he is one of the Christians. This level of character will play well in the big moments since nothing on the field will be as big as their walk with God. It also brings the team together to do God’s will and have each other’s back.

It is going to another great season and will be a great message of a team filled with Christians in the belly of the pagan cult of Oregon, the UofO. God is good and revival is happening in Oregon. Imagine if the revival starts in Eugene and Portland to sweep across America.
