But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Portland is NOT a sports town so to think they should spend near a billion dollars to upgrade the Rose Garden is a pipe dream. Every politician who is on board with this boondoggle will have to explain why they believe the Blazers will be in P-Town in five years when the economics simply add up.
When you have professional sports teams changing cities like women change shoes why would anyone pick a town which supports burning down ICE more than their only franchise. They would have more support if they changed their name to the Portland Antifa although the P-Town Bricklayers would be more accurate.
After running every successful business from lumber to coffee out of the state they suddenly want to pour hundreds of millions into a business which does not produce anything. Entertainment is not a product or a real business; it is a luxury successful states and businesses waste money on. The politicians have run all those successful businesses out.
They claim there will be people going to dinner or drinking before and after the game yet do not explain how after spending hundreds of dollars on tickets and a safe place to park your car so you will have a way home. You going to eat at one of the boarded-up buildings with the kill ICE graffiti on it or the one that gets robbed every night. Then walk to the Rose Garden hoping you don’t get robbed or raped and the women are even more worried, there is a weird business model.
The bottom line is sports franchises make their money two ways, TV sets and TV sets, if people ain’t watching you ain’t staying. Cities like New York, Dallas, LA, and Philly have subscription viewers who pay to watch in the millions. They have a revenue stream which is something a small town like Portland can't even imagine having. Nobody outside of Portland cares about the Blazers which brings you to the second way of making money.
Portland has zero nationwide following. The Ducks are known across the nation for exciting games and cool uniforms, and are the only national team in the state. Teams like Boston, LA, and San Antonio have followers or people knowing they are going to have a good game to see a good game, if there is such a thing in the NBA? That has never been the case with Portland. They only thing the city is known for is Antifa and violence, nothing else.
Then you have the final nail in the coffin, taxes. Oregon is one of the least friendly tax systems in the country. They are proposing a user tax to make the players, coaches and workers help in paying for the renovation which is going to make the highest paid players want to go the way of Dutch Brothers and play in Orlando where they have no income taxes. He gets a 20% raise playing somewhere besides Portland who doesn’t care anyway. It ain’t personal, its business.
If you think the Blazers are going to be in Portland in five years there is a bridge in Baltimore you may want to buy. It costs about the same price and is nearly as useful.
It really comes down to Oregon is the most poorly run state in the union and cannot afford a sports team let alone a remodel to keep the team. Oregonians are already taxed out of their homes and jobs while liberal politicians increase the taxes and decrease the safety of the state. Rather than remodeling the Rose Garden, how about remodeling the state gummit this year?
Pray for Portland Revival
